Perfect for when you’re in a slump.
I have experienced many reading slumps in my reading journey. Sometimes they’re caused by burnout, so reading too much and now I just can’t be bothered. Or you’re trying to get through the worst books ever and before you know it’s been a month, you haven’t picked up anything else. However, I firmly believe in leaving books alone and starting something new.
These are some books that I read that were perfect for getting me out of a slump. Some are light reads, others were so intense and captivating that I just had to get through them. Now I’m not necessarily saying these are the best books I’ve ever read. Some aren’t even four stars and above they simply did what I needed them to do. So here are 5 reading slump book recommendations!

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang
This book utilises the ‘fake relationship’ trope to explore dating for women on the spectrum. Stella the main character has Aspergers and wants to experience intimacy in a way that appeases and works for her.
The Kiss Quotient is so light and refreshing. It is a very funny book while still being extremely insightful. This a great for a book slump as the themes aren’t extremely heavy making it an easier read, but it is still a delightful experience.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
The story follows Monique Grant, a journalist chosen to write the life story of Hollywood icon Evelyn Hugo. A historical romance set on the backdrop of glamorous 60s Hollywood, Evelyn recounts her seven marriages where secrets unravel, revealing a tale of ambition, love, sacrifice, and identity.
This book is scandalous! Every moment of it is riveting – the author takes us on an adventurous ride through juicy entertaining heartbreaking and emotional stories. It does have a bit of a slow start which may not help if you are in a slump but Evelyn’s story is such a whirlwind you can’t help but keep reading to know how it ends.

The Duke and I – Julia Quinn
Who doesn’t love Bridgerton? I was so taken by the show when it came out that I just had to read the books. I fell in love with not only the family but the world Julia Quinn created. The Duke and I is the first book in the Bridgerton series and takes on the journey of Daphne and Simon falling for each other. While still being a light book it touches on the naivete of girls, especially in that era.
I started reading the Bridgerton Series at the beginning of 2021 after a long spell of not reading and it was a catalyst for me falling back into the world of books. That winter I read everything Julia Quinn has ever written. While I didn’t love all of them, the Duke and I was a good start to fall back into the habit.

Before I Let Go by Kennedy Ryan
I love Kennedy Ryan, she is a wonderful writer, who always touches on real-life issues in her books. Before I Let Go is a second-chance romance about a divorced couple finding their way back to each other and the complexities surrounding rediscovering old love. There is also an overarching theme of healing.
I would say this book is good to bring you out of a book slump because the story itself is captivating with strong but complex characters. I couldn’t put it down. This is not necessarily the lightest book but definitely a good read.

Fake Empire by C.W. Farnsworth
Fake Empire is an arranged marriage billionaire romance. I love reading about rich people. There’s no struggle and stress. Arranged marriages are some of my favourite tropes and it is done quite well in this book. The stakes aren’t very high and the plot isn’t difficult to grasp. The book is primarily about two people learning to know and trust each other in what could be seen as unusual circumstances.
The book is not overly demanding and I had a lot of fun reading it. If you’re looking for a romance that doesn’t require too much brain power but is still an enjoyable read. I absolutely recommend this one. I did go on to read the rest of the books in the series but they do get a bit more serious so keep that in mind if you want to explore.
Now that you’re reading again here are my fave romance books.
Love the kiss quotient 🥰
