Some of my Favourite Black Romance Novels under 300 Pages

I absolutely love short books. Sometimes I’m not in the mood for anything over 400 pages, and I firmly believe there’s nothing you need to tell me that can’t be said in 450 pages or fewer. Don’t get me wrong – I’ve read many, many long books this year. In fact, I’ve definitely read more long ones than short ones. But now and again, a quick read that scratches a particular itch is exactly what you need, and no genre delivers that quite like romance.

Kindle Unlimited is packed with Black self-published and indie authors who are thriving in the contemporary romance scene. Many of their stories come in at 300 pages or under, not so short that they are considered novellas, which often feel slight or underdeveloped. They’re full stories that still feel rich, complete, and emotionally satisfying.

So, I’m taking you through four books I’ve read between last year and this year that are 4- or 5-star reads for me – compelling, beautiful romances that give you everything in 300 pages or less. As you know, I try not to recommend the same book too often, so I’m adding two special mentions at the end.

One More Shot by Anise Starr

After an unforgettable one-night stand gone very wrong, Eliott wants nothing to do with Dane. When they’re thrown back together at a wedding, unresolved tension resurfaces. Dane is determined to fix their past, and Eliott must decide whether to run again or take a chance on a second shot at love.

I went on an Anise Starr binge last year. She’s one of the few Black British romance authors I’ve truly connected with, and I even featured her in my Black History Month post in October. This book was a fun and charming read with that second-chance romance vibe I can never resist. I also loved the subplot involving Eliott’s family — especially her role as the eldest daughter in a Black immigrant household. It added depth and cultural nuance to what could have simply been a light, easy read, making the story feel richer and more meaningful.

Her Exception by B. Love

Shalom and Mecca once loved each other deeply before heartbreak and silence drove them apart. When work forces them back into each other’s lives, buried feelings return. Both have built the lives they dreamed of — except love. Now they must choose whether pride and pain will win, or love will.

When I was scrolling through the shorter books I read last year, I noticed I’d given this one five stars. I went back to remind myself why, and instantly remembered how strongly it made me feel. It deals with some heavy and emotional moments, but the second-chance romance is brilliantly developed. I loved the authentic arc from enemies, to friends, and back to lovers — it felt believable, heartfelt, and incredibly satisfying.

And One for Me by Ashley Nicole

Taylor has everything except the right man. Lawrence wants nothing serious — until Taylor. Friends, family ties, and timing complicate the growing attraction between them. When he finally makes a move, they must decide if stepping beyond friendship risks everything or leads them exactly where they’re meant to be.

I adore AshleyNicole! I’ve read everything she’s written, and the Mason family series remains one of my favourite Black romance collections. I think this is around book ten, and though I think they work as standalones, I absolutely recommend reading them all, though some shine more than others, and I am definitely biased. This instalment follows the only daughter in the family, which made it even more special for me. It’s mostly light-hearted with touches of emotional depth, and overall, a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Books I’ve Suggested Before

Clearly, Asia Monique has my heart. I mentioned this one in a Rave Reads post earlier this year. It’s a very short book, but the story is compelling, the romance feels genuine, and the plot absolutely delivers — all well under 300 pages!

I honestly couldn’t rave about this book more. I finished it in just a few hours, and it was one of the most beautiful, emotional romances I read that month. I recently recommended it in my Rave Reads: Romance Edition post, so be sure to give that a read for more of my thoughts.

This book combines two of my favourite things: an arranged marriage and Black mafia romance, and I devoured it. It’s fast-paced, dramatic, and under 300 pages! I featured it in my Favourite Black Vows Before Love post, so do check that out if you want a fuller breakdown of why I loved it.

The more I post, the more certain books are bound to appear again — especially as the year draws to a close and I start putting together my wrap-ups and favourites lists (which I am VERY excited for). Some titles will definitely make repeat appearances, so I’m going to have to get a bit more creative with my recommendations from here on out.

In the meantime, I’ve created a dedicated Goodreads shelf for books under 300 pages, which I’ll continue updating regularly. If you’re ever in need of inspiration, do have a browse. Fair warning, though — they won’t all be five-star reads!

As always, thank you so much for being here, and see you soon!
