I am a dedicated romance girly, so it’s only right that I give you romance books to read. The part of the genre I love the most is the feeling. I LOVE love, the yearning, the words of declaration, the angst, all of it! Nothing is better than delving into the beginnings of a love story and all the feelings that come with that.
I have read so many romances in my life and have a dedicated list of book boyfriends that will bring us all to our knees, so best believe I have thoroughly combed through my collection to find the best recommendations for you. While these books are majorly romantic they all have larger themes that teach us so much about personal growth and human interaction. These are 5 books I have read/reread recently that I love. So, in no particular order, here are 5 romance books you need.

The Closer I Get to You – Ashley Nicole
This is one of my favourite books, not just romances. The story deals with intense emotions around trauma and healing from a usually untold perspective. The romance is one I would consider atypical, it is a slow build and the climax is not as explosive as we’re used to, however, that doesn’t make it any less impactful.
I love Lou, the male main character, it takes a while for you to warm up to him, but the journey of recovery and healing he goes on is beautiful to witness and told so well. The story is very intense but so captivating and needs to be read spoiler-free.

Fast by Millie Belizaire
Whewww this book broke my heart! It was traumatic and devastating but healing and inspiring all at the same time. The book touches on some heavy themes like sexual abuse so this is your trigger warning before you dive in. While the romance is a vital part of the plot, the core part of this story is self-discovery. It is such a beautiful story and one I highly recommend.
I also think the themes really speak to black women and the adultification of black girls in society. It holds a mirror up to our communities and highlights difficult themes to spark very important conversations. It is a wonderful read.

Soul Ties by Miss Candice
Now this is a VERY unconventional love story. There is an intense moral struggle that makes it a very complex read. Likely, you will not like the plot, but I can guarantee that you will be captivated enough to keep reading and see how it ends. The characters are complicated and it is often difficult to know who you want to root for. You might not agree with the premise of the story but It is a well-written story full of angst and an absolute emotional rollercoaster.
The story for me in many ways is about knowing when to let go and walk away. Sometimes we stay in situations that no longer serve us. Either from fear of the unknown or comfortability. I think that is the underlying theme in a book that is wrapped in supposed immorality.

Love’s Hope by K Lashaun
If you dislike difficult characters, this might not be for you. I won’t lie the main character, Hope, is insufferable! She is very clearly a complex character with a lot of inner demons to battle. However, all of that is made up for by the Male main character. We love a man who is secure and serious about what he wants. I enjoyed this book, it had lots of mini tropes in one.
This book not only touches on the importance of letting go of the past but also giving yourself grace for mistakes and decisions made and not letting them hold you back. Sometimes the fear of making the same mistake again can stop us from the experiences of a lifetime.

Reel by Kennedy Ryan
This book is more than just a love story—it’s a tale of passion and the sacrifices one makes to achieve their dreams even to their detriment. Reel by Kennedy Ryan intertwines ambition, artistry and the complexities of unexpected love. It is a heartfelt exploration of love and surrender in exceptional circumstances and it is a beautiful depiction of loving through adversity.
I have now read this book twice and I think I loved it even more the second time. There are some very difficult themes in the book which add layers to the story being told. I believe the author does the themes justice.
I hope you give these 5 romance book recommendations a go, and I would love to hear your thoughts!
