Welcome back to my TBR Update!

I read one book from my TBR; in fact, I barely read.

As I didn’t read many books in October, I’m not adding too many new ones to the list (this list, that is; my official one is miles long, lmao).

I read The Re-Write and gave it 4/5 stars. An enjoyable read overall, I gave a brief overview in my October Round Up.

I’m also debating whether I still want to read a few of the books sitting on my TBR, namely Really, Good Actually, but I’ll report back once I’ve made up my mind. In my head, I’m just like I haven’t even gotten through books I really want to read that are well-rated, let alone this one book with horrendous reviews I stumbled upon.

Anyway, without further ado, here are the three new books I’m very excited to read — and I can only hope I actually get through them!

The Books I Have Left

3 New Books!

Who Asked You? By Terry Macmillan

Genre: Contemporary African American Fiction

Betty Jean, a devoted grandmother, unexpectedly finds herself raising her two grandsons while managing her own family’s chaos. Through humour and heart, she discovers the strength to hold everything together when life doesn’t go as planned.

I’m always looking for new books to read, even when I haven’t touched the ones I already own. I first heard of Terry McMillan through waiting to watch a very popular film based on one of her novels, but I’ve never actually read her work before. The premise of this one really intrigued me. I’ve been wanting to read more stories that explore life and family rather than romance, which is usually my go-to — and this seems to fit that perfectly.

Black Cake by Charmain Wilkerson

Genre: Crime Fiction

After their mother’s death, siblings Benny and Byron discover a hidden past through her voice recording and a mysterious black cake. As family secrets unfold, they learn the truth about their heritage and what it means to belong.

Like Who Asked You?, Black Cake centres on life, identity, and experience — particularly those of Black people — which immediately drew me in. It’s also got a crime/thriller element, which adds an extra layer of intrigue. I haven’t read a thriller in a while (they tend to stress me out, lmao) , so this feels like a good way to ease back into the genre. Plus, it’s a great pick for a book vs. screen comparison, since there’s a Disney+ adaptation that came out a few years ago.

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khalid Hosseini

Genre: Historical Literary Fiction

Mariam and Laila, two women from different generations, are brought together by war and fate in Afghanistan. As their lives intertwine through love, loss, and survival, they form an unbreakable bond that will change both their destinies.

I was gifted this book (well, gifted — I picked it and someone else paid for it, haha) while browsing in a bookshop last week. It’s actually been on my TBR for years, one of those books you know will be painful and difficult to read, so you keep putting it off. I’m not really a physical book kind of girl anymore, but this is exactly the sort of story I’d want to hold in my hands while reading. I’m genuinely excited to finally get to it, and I hope I “enjoy” it.

If you have read any of these books, please do let me know your opinions! I’m excited for these.

A short and sweet TBR Update this November. As always, follow me on Goodreads and Fable to see my full TBR and keep track of what I’m reading.

Thanks so much for being here!
