I am, without a doubt, a Yearner. I love love. Romance has always been—and will likely always be—my favourite genre. There’s just something about the way love unfolds on the page that speaks to me. I adore so many romance tropes (trust me, we’ll get into those another day), but when it comes to characters, there’s nothing that tugs at my heartstrings quite like a male main character who is unwavering in his devotion from the very start.
Now, let me be clear—I’m not talking about love-bombers or men who come on too strong in a way that feels manipulative. I’m talking about the ones who know, deep in their soul, that they’ve found their person. The men who stand firm in their affections, who don’t play games, and who remain steady even when the woman they love is hesitant, guarded, or even downright difficult ( I have so many of those).
With that in mind, I’ve curated this list of best book boyfriends who embody that kind of devotion. But to make things interesting, I’ll be diving into exactly what makes each of these men so swoon-worthy, weighing them up against three criteria. Beyond just their romantic gestures, but also how they support and empower the women in their lives, helping them grow into the best versions of themselves. Because the best book boyfriends don’t just love fiercely—they inspire.
If you love a devoted male character, these are the books for you!
I will be scoring the characters on three criteria:
- Devotion & Consistency – How steadfast is he in his love? Does he stay true to his feelings from the beginning, or does he waver?
- Emotional Support & Growth – Does he uplift and empower his love interest? He isn’t just there to romance the heroine; he helps her grow and encourages her to be the best version of herself.
- Romantic Gestures & Chemistry – How well does he express his love? This isn’t just about grand gestures—it’s about the little things, too.
Before I get into the main list, an honourable mention goes to.
Isaiah Rhodes – Play Along by Liz Tomforde
His accidental marriage to Kennedy leads to a complex relationship, where his protective nature and unwavering support become evident. Isaiah was committed to Kennedy even before they ended up together! His dedication is evident as he navigates the complexities of their relationship, especially her unwillingness to give in to the changes in her feelings. Isaiah’s protective nature provided a stable environment for Kennedy, especially amid others who were trying to tear her down, work and her parents. Isaiah is damn near perfect! There’s no real reason he isn’t a top 5 book boyfriend, unfortunately, I hold the top 5 and their books in higher regard so he misses out today.
Disclaimer, I’m rating the Characters NOT the story. I can’t guarantee that you won’t get annoyed by the female characters or the general plot, also if you disagree please don’t flog me.
So here are my favourite fictional boyfriends ranked,
In fifth place we have….
Judah Cross – This Could Be Us by Kennedy Ryan
Judah Cross is hired to investigate Soledad’s (the FMC) ex-husband and despite their complicated circumstances, Judah’s attraction to Soledad is evident. Even with him being partially responsible for the situation she finds herself in, he becomes a supportive figure as she navigates these challenges.
- Devotion & Consistency: Judah was so down bad for Soledad and he never gave up on her. He waits for her to heal and be ready for a new relationship. However, this never derails him and he ensures that his presence is always felt.
- Emotional Support & Growth: Judah provides a supportive presence, allowing Soledad the space to rebuild her life and self-esteem after her husband’s betrayal.
- Romantic Gestures & Chemistry: He was extremely perceptive of her and everything about her and we all love a man who pays attention.
Judah is a perfect boyfriend and was amazing to Soledad but I’m still not sure why he liked her so much.
In fourth place….
Rhysand – A Court of Thorns and Roses Series by Sarah J Maas
The story follows Feyre Archeron, a mortal thrust into the fae world, and becomes a key player in a battle that could determine the fate of their world. Rhysand is the enigmatic and powerful High Lord of the Night Court. Initially portrayed as cunning and untrustworthy, he reveals a deep sense of loyalty and protective nature, especially towards his mate, Feyre Archeron.
- Devotion & Consistency: From the moment he realises Feyre is his mate, he is unwavering in his love and support, however, this doesn’t translate as clearly in his actions he was also very mean so he loses points.
- Emotional Support & Growth: – Rhysand strength is he doesn’t try to control Feyre, instead, he values her independence and empowers her to be better, allowing her to make her own choices while still being there for her.
- Romantic Gestures & Chemistry: – Rhysand risks his life and kingdom for not just Feyre but her sisters as well on several occasions. No gesture is bigger than that.
Rhys only loses points due to the way their relationship is introduced. While I understood it for the plot, there were elements of dishonesty and I just don’t like that.
In third place is ….
Verse Presley – In This Moment by K Lashaun
When tasked with securing a rare artefact collection for her toughest client, Garryn (FMC) discovers it belongs to self-made millionaire and music mogul Verse Presley. To her dismay, he refuses to part with it, forcing her to go to great lengths to change his mind. Verse employs some alternative methods to earn Garryn’s affection.
- Devotion & Consistency: Verse is unwavering and determined in his pursuit of Garryn Taylor. Despite her initial resistance and emotional defences, he remains patient and steadfast, working diligently to break down her walls and earn her trust.
- Emotional Support & Growth: Verse’s patience and understanding play a crucial role in Garryn’s emotional healing. He provides a safe space for her to confront past traumas and supports her journey toward self-awareness and personal growth.
- Romantic Gestures & Chemistry: The chemistry between him and Garryn is palpable. Verse’s actions are both bold and heartfelt. He consistently puts the plans in place to make her dreams come true.
Verse kind of manipulates Garryn into exploring their connection, she was a difficult babe so I understand it so he gains those points back for actually putting up with her rubbish. I would have left her behind.
In second place is…
Canon Holt – Reel by Kennedy Ryan
I talk about Reel a lot. I know you’re all sick of me. Some people might be shocked that he isn’t number one. Canon is a passionate and talented filmmaker who becomes deeply involved with the protagonist, Neevah Saint who is also the star of his big movie. The book explores love and surrender in exceptional circumstances.
- Devotion & Consistency: Canon was deeply committed to his work, unwavering in his principles, and he broke his own rules for Neevah. He was a bit blunt but his attraction was clear from day one. No matter the challenges (and there were many), his commitment never wavered.
- Emotional Support & Growth: Neevah goes through a lot emotionally and physically in the book. His support helps her navigate the challenges of her career and personal life, fostering her growth, and ensuring she is the best version of herself.
- Romantic Gestures & Chemistry: Their chemistry was intense! Canon’s actions, both grand and subtle, convey his deepening love and admiration for Neevah, including halting his dreams to ensure she was well taken care of.
If you look at the word devotion in the dictionary, Canon Holt shows up. He was everything and more for Neevah, however he just misses out on first place due to his attitude at the beginning of the book.
So First Place and the title of Best Book Boyfriends goes to…
🏆Daniel Grant – Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez
Part of Your World is one of my favourite books I’ve read so far this year. So heartfelt, it pulled at my heartstrings and even made me tear up. I might do an in-depth review! The premise follows ER doctor Alexis Montgomery who meets small-town carpenter Daniel Grant and sparks fly despite their vastly different lives. As their connection deepens, Alexis must choose between family expectations and the love that truly makes her happy. Daniel Grant is a charming and compassionate man and the absolute perfect boyfriend.
- Devotion & Consistency: From the moment Daniel meets Alexis, he is all in. There’s no second-guessing, —just pure, unwavering devotion. Even though they come from different worlds, he never lets their differences shake his feelings for her. He’s patient, and understanding, and gives Alexis the space to figure out her path while still making it clear he’s there for her.
- Emotional Support & Growth: He sees Alexis for who she truly is, beyond the expectations placed on her, and encourages her to live for herself instead of for others. He doesn’t try to control or fix her life; instead, he empowers her to make the choices that will bring her real happiness.
- Romantic Gestures & Chemistry: Daniel understood their financial differences and knew he didn’t need grand gestures to prove his love— he thrived on the small acts of intimacy. He understood exactly what she needed. He was also ready to give up all he held dear just to be close to her.
Daniel was also deeply connected to his community, showing that his kindness extends beyond their relationship. He had that warm, joyful energy that made it impossible not to love, but he also knew when to be strong and hold his ground when it matters. He really was just a good man and was exactly what Alexis needed. That is why he is at the top of my list!
Well, that’s my round-up of my favourite book boyfriends. I hope you enjoyed this read!
If you have any characters that you think exceed these, please let me know! I would love to add to this list and maybe we can revisit this in the future with an updated version!
As always thank you for being here and see you next time!
